Finding love is already pretty hard, so it’s good business to make it easier for Justin Bieber fans to find their pop music-loving soulmates.
That’s why dating app Tinder has partnered with music streaming service Spotify so that Tinder users can show off their music tastes on their profiles. Tinder said on Tuesday that it users would be able to connect their Spotify accounts and automatically show who their most listened-to artists are. They can also add their favorite “anthem” to their profiles under the theory that “a song is worth a thousand words,” although they don’t need a Spotify account to do so.
When checking out another user’s profile, Tinder singles can also tap to listen to short clips of their favorite songs.
“Welcome to a completely new sensory experience on Tinder,” wrote the company in a blog post. “Get ready for some serious sound.”

The upside of this new partnership is obvious: Would-be daters can now choose potential Tinder matches based on their music tastes while Spotify gets exposed to more potential customers. Common interests and tastes like music, food, sports, and traveling have long been popular details single folks use to evaluate potential mates. Most dating websites and apps already let users include some this kind of information on their profiles. And finding commonalities is a natural human instinct.
But it might not the be the best—or even a good—indicator of compatibility. Core values and personality traits are also important, though perhaps harder to measure in the context of a dating app. How do you really find how a potential mate would behave in the face of hardship? How do they handle stress? Are they selfish or selfless?
Last week, I received a user survey from Hinge, another dating app, and many of the questions focused on the Myers–Briggs test, which assesses people’s personality types. Do I really want to display my personality type on my profile? And would I want to see other people’s? Some introverted types are said to get along best with some extroverts, for example.
It’s hard to say if that would make for better luck in dating online. At least Tinder is now helping its own users find someone to share headphones with—or Apple’s new AirPods.
